Alabama Bans Transgender Female Athletes from Women’s College Sports

Gov. Kay Ivey of Alabama signed a bill on Tuesday that forbids transgender women from competing on college women’s sports teams.

Until recently, the state forbade transgender athletes from grades K–12 from participating in female youth sports.

Even after receiving hormone therapy, it is against the law for students to play as someone who is not their biological gender.

“Look, in Alabama, you cannot participate in women’s and girls’ sports if you are a biological male. It’s about fairness, plain and simple,” This was stated by Ivey.

When legislation made progress in the middle of April, the movement for the college rules got underway.

2021 saw the implementation of the K–12 ban.

“Forcing women to compete against biological men would reverse decades of progress that women have made for equal opportunity in athletics,” Sponsor of the bill and Republican Representative Susan DuBose informed the committee last month. Dubose said “no amount of hormone therapy can undo all those advantages” of being born male.

According to the bill, biological girls would not be permitted to play sports with boys and men.

Members and supporters of the LGBTQ+ community have criticized the ban.

Carmarion D. Anderson-Harvey, Alabama state director of the Human Rights Campaign, an advocacy group for LGBTQ+ people, said the legislation is part of a “systematic attack against LGBTQ+ people” in both in Alabama and elsewhere.

“She has helped pass four anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Alabama in just two years with the help of radical lawmakers. From dictating what bathrooms we can use to blatantly ignoring the actual problems in women’s sports, these politicians are making Alabama an increasingly hostile place for transgender people and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole,” Anderson-Harvey said.

Participation in female sports by transgender women and girls is prohibited in twenty other states.
