Ben Stokes and Beth Mead Were Nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award

The best player in this year’s European Championships, which England won, was the Lionesses forward Beth Mead, who was nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award alongside Ben Stokes and five other candidates.

Beth Mead, a lioness who saved the team, is one of six candidates for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

At this year’s European Championships, which Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses won, forward Mead of Arsenal and England stood out as she was named Player of the Tournament for her six goals and five assists.

Her six goals allowed her to finish the tournament as its leading scorer. She has also scored three goals and four assists in seven Women’s Super League games this season (2022–23), in addition to her 11 goals and eight assists from the previous campaign.

The BBC shortlist includes Mead, Ronnie O’Sullivan, and Ben Stokes, the men’s test captain for England.

The other candidates for the individual award include teenage gymnast Jessica Gadirova, athletics champion Jake Wightman, and curler Eve Muirhead. On Wednesday evening, the victor will be declared.

A Remarkable Year for Mead

Mead had a remarkable year, the highlight of which was leading the Lionesses to the European Championship victory. Her remarkable year comes to an end with the BBC nomination.

In front of a record-breaking 90,000 spectators at Wembley, England defeated Germany to win the European Championships trophy.

Mead notched goals in each of the Lionesses’ three group games, including a hat trick in the 8-0 victory over Norway. She also scored the game’s first goal as England defeated Sweden in the semifinals.

The 27-year-old was also a member of the Lionesses team that successfully qualified for the Women’s World Cup in 2018.

She came in second place in the Women’s Ballon d’Or, which was won by Spain and Barcelona star Alexia Putellas, thanks to her performances for England and Arsenal, who finished second in the Women’s Super League last season after being edged out for the championship by Chelsea on the final day.

However, Mead sustained an ACL injury during Arsenal’s WSL loss to Manchester United last month, seriously jeopardizing her ability to play in the World Cup. A new contract at Arsenal was announced shortly after the news.

Who Else is in the Running?

First-year as the men’s Test team captain for England, cricketer Ben Stokes has had a hectic year.

In 10 England Tests against Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, and India, the 31-year-old has guided his team to nine victories.

England became the first nation to complete a clean sweep in Pakistan on Tuesday when Stokes sealed a 3-0 series victory there.

With a score of 52 not out in the Melbourne final, Stokes also contributed significantly to England’s victory over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.

Snooker legend O’Sullivan won his seventh World Championship this year to tie Stephen Hendry’s record for most victories in the open era, and Muirhead helped Great Britain win the gold medal in curling at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Last month, Wightman won the 1500m gold at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, and 18-year-old Gadirova won the floor gold on the final day of the Gymnastics World Championships.
