Eli A. Wolff Memorial Fund for Disability Justice in Sport

In memory of Eli A. Wolff, his family and the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) are establishing an endowed memorial fund to assist young researchers and activists who work to expand opportunities for athletes with disabilities.

On April 4, 2023, Eli, who had a long list of accomplishments, died. Among them was his role in creating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

He devoted a large portion of his life to the advocacy of equal opportunity and inclusion in sport, particularly for those with disabilities, as an activist and a champion for justice.

Eli was an academic, a Paralympic athlete, and a social activist.

Proceeds from the fund will be used to support scholarships and research grants for undergraduate students, doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, and early career faculty who advance disability sport in the following areas:

  • Inclusion
  • Intersectionality with other under-represented groups
  • Sport for development
  • Policy and advocacy
  • Public education

Applications for the program will be evaluated by academics with expertise in sport for development and sport for social change, as well as representatives from Eli’s family, under the direction of NASSS.

Each year, awards will be given out at the NASSS Annual Meeting, and all recipients are required to present the outcomes of their work in a plenary session the following year.
