The 36-year-old Frenchman, who took first place in a marathon tournament, was scheduled to play Holger Rune on Thursday.

Gael Monfils won’t be returning to Roland Garros for an encore, at least not this time around.

The well-liked Frenchman withdrew from the clay-court major late Wednesday due to a wrist injury, less than 24 hours after winning what he described as one of the top two matches of his career.

“My wrist was giving me trouble, which I am unable to fix. felt it throughout the game. Actually the whole match today,” he told press. “The doctor advised against playing while suffering from that kind of injury. Actually, yesterday was quite risky, and today is definitely telling me to stop.”

In a thrilling comeback victory over Argentina’s Sebastan Baez on Court Philippe Chatrier, the 36-year-old fought back from a set down in the final set to beat Baez 6-4, 6-4. A fascinating matchup with Holger Rune was set up as a result of Monfils’ effort, which marked his first full-match victory of the year.
