NCAA National Championship: UConn Wins Fifth Title, Blowing Out San Diego State

Following a resoundingly successful run through the NCAA tournament, No. 4 On Monday night, UConn handled No. 1 in a decisive exclamation point. 5 San Diego State 76–59.

The Huskies narrowly missed becoming the most dominant team in tournament history by a few points. By 24, they defeated Iona. Prior to Monday’s game against the Aztecs, Miami led by 13, Arkansas by 23, Gonzaga by 28, and Saint Mary’s by 15. In order to surpass the previous tournament record for point differential, they would have had to defeat San Diego State by 26 points, but the Aztecs maintained a respectable score in the second half.

Prior to an extended dry spell in which it went over 11 minutes without making a field goal in the first half, San Diego State had a brief burst of success to start the game. As a result, UConn capitalized and led 36-24 at halftime. Even with only a little more than five minutes left in the game, the Aztecs managed to keep things interesting late in the second half, even reducing the deficit to five points. But as the game came to a close, the Huskies gained momentum and easily won.

The Huskies were led by Tristen Newton, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four was Adama Sanogo, who also contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds.
