Reports: Phoenix Suns Will Trade Or Waive Chris Paul

According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report and Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Phoenix Suns have informed veteran point guard Chris Paul that he will either be traded or waived this offseason.

The 38-year-old will be released by the Suns if they are unable to find a trade partner. Phoenix might try to re-sign Paul this summer on a less expensive contract if he is waived, according to Charania.

Haynes adds that Paul doesn’t have any plans to stop playing; he wants to continue for a few more years and join a team that is in the hunt for a championship.

Paul’s salary for the upcoming season is $30, 800,000, but only $15, 800,000 of that amount is guaranteed. Furthermore, Paul’s $30,800,000 salary for 2024–2025 is not guaranteed. With Paul potentially available for waiver, Phoenix could save a ton of cash.

Prior to the recent NBA trade deadline, the Suns looked at Paul, but they ultimately decided against making a deal. Kyrie Irving was reportedly once offered by Phoenix along with Paul, Jae Crowder, and a first-round pick, but the Brooklyn Nets ultimately decided to go with Irving’s deal from the Dallas Mavericks.

Paul participated in 59 games this season, scoring 13.9 points, dishing out 8.9 assists, pulling down 4.3 rebounds, making 1.7 threes, and committing 1.5 steals while shooting 44.0% from the field, 37.5% from three, and 83.1% from the line.

If Paul is released, potential teams he could join if he does so include the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers (where he would finally have the chance to play with his close friend LeBron James), and other contenders.
