UNC Women's Basketball Names First General Manager

The UNC women’s basketball team has appointed its first-ever general manager in light of the rapidly evolving college basketball landscape.

In the past few months, there has been an increase in discussion about college sports programs hiring a general manager.

One team from North Carolina has joined the mix as some programs have already made this move.

Liz Roberts has been promoted to General Manager/Special Assistant to the Head Coach, according to Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball program. Roberts served as the program’s Director of Recruiting Management and Student-Athlete Engagement in his previous position.

The UNC women’s basketball team is familiar territory for Roberts. She joined the team as a freshman and was selected for the 2016–2017 squad. Banghart, who was about to begin her first season as the head coach in Chapel Hill, gave Roberts a scholarship prior to the start of her senior year.

Since 2020, Roberts has served as a member of the UNC women’s basketball coaching staff and has since been promoted to a position that is now starting to appear essential for all collegiate athletic programs.

The men’s team was anticipated to make this kind of move first, so it’s encouraging to see that the women’s program, which is thought to have one of the best rosters in the nation going into the 2023–2024 season, wasted no time in implementing the change.

The hiring is strikingly North Carolina-like. A native Tar Heel who is well-versed in the program (as well as the university) has been promoted. This is a big step for the UNC women’s basketball program to make this happen, even though we’ll have to wait and see what this title includes.
