Wednesday’s jaw-dropping infield play by Wander Franco, the shortstop for the Rays, attracted attention.

Franco snagged a hard-hit grounder up the middle, casually spun the ball to himself, then barehandedly smacked it across the diamond to first base.

The 22-year-old made fluid and showy play, and his throw to first base beat Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds in plenty of time.

Fans on Twitter were in awe over Franco’s play at shortstop, dubbing it a “ball flip” and comparing his impressive transfer to the defensive version of a bat flip.

Franco discussed his thoughts during the play with reporters in a press conference following the game.

“Sometimes I get careless during practice. I tend to do that at practice and I think through instincts it just happened,” said Using a translator, Franco is speaking.
